Currently Premier League champions Liverpool have had a tough start to the Premier League season this year and according to manager Jurgen Klopp this has mainly been down to the compacted fixture list and has therefore led to a lot of his star players become injured; at one point they had 9 first team players on the side-lines. Saying that, do Liverpool still have the ability to win back-to-back titles even though their squad is struggling with injuries, we investigate below.

Liverpool are currently tied first for the Premier League table with Tottenham on 24 points and even with their injury list are still able to top the Premier League. In fact, they have only lost once this season, an embarrassing 7-2 loss to relegation survivors last year Aston Villa but since then have booked their ideas up with a couple of huge wins.

The front three this season of Firmino, Salah and Mane have had some of the pressure taken off their shoulders due to summer signing Diego Jota moving from Wolves to Merseyside. Although Jota was a bit of a gamble, the Portuguese striker has been somewhat a revelation since he has come into the side when Salah and Mane contracted Covid-19 and has scored 9 goals in as many games. Jota is only 23 years old and has the potential to claim a starting place in this Liverpool side, especially when looking at Firmino’s goalscoring record.

Furthermore, Thiago, Naby Keita and Jordan Henderson have all suffered injuries this year and has put them on the side-lines for at least a couple of games and therefore other squad members have had to set up. Academy product Curtis Jones has been the perfect example of how to take your chance as he has come in and produced some impressive performances, some of which he has produced Man of the Match performances. Further to that, he’s also popped up with 3 goals this year.

Ultimately, although Liverpool has struggled with injuries this season, the squad that the Reds and Jurgen Klopp has built over the past couple of seasons has become that impressive that they are still delivering even without start players in the side. This is seriously impressive and we expect that to win the Premier League title again this year.
