We all love to talk and make fun of the massive spending that teams like City and Chelsea do, but there is one reality we have to face ourselves. We have spent the most out of any Premier League team this summer window. Our net spend so far this window is around £155m. Next would actually be West Ham with a net spend of around £88m. The notoriously big spenders like United, Manchester City, and Chelsea have spent £51m £31m, and £50m respectively. So our net spend is at least triple.
And I am glad we are spending all of this money. Here are two reasons why:
For one, it shows that we have ambition. Not just to other clubs in the Premier League and Europe, but to our fans as well. It shows that we really want to improve on the fantastic season we had last year. Not to say that we did not want to do this in the past.
Every club wants to improve, and just because some spend more than others does not necessarily mean that one club has more desire to improve over another. But it could mean that one club is looking for more immediate success compared to others who may be looking more long term. I think with this spending it means that we truly believe that we can do something really special in the next couple seasons, and we need a few signings to show we want to win sooner rather than later.
Other clubs know how well Liverpool did last year, and now they are seeing that we are signing top players. It is a more aggressive approach than usual, and it shows that we, as a club, believe we have the ability to achieve something extraordinary. The fans will see this and will hopefully get behind the team even more, assured that we are going all out to win as much silverware as possible.
The other reason why I am glad we are spending all of this money is that it shows the total faith we have in Jurgen Klopp. We have always had the ability to spend this much money in the past with our other managers. With Klopp we are actually doing it. Similar to United with Moyes and Mourinho. With Moyes they had the ability to spend as much as they are now with Jose. But they are actually spending that money with Jose.
This is because Klopp (and Mourinho) is a proven winner and has improved the state of the team since he took over. He took us back to the Champions League final, which we have not taken part in since over a decade. We legitimately strike fear in other opponents all throughout Europe. Klopp has shown that his way of playing is successful, even with some pieces missing.
If we can give him a few more pieces that fit that style of play, perhaps better results will come. We hired him because we believe that he can bring us trophies and an attractive style of play, one that will get the Kop roaring and backing the team. But if we do not show any faith in him and give him the players he wants for his brand of football, then why bring him in at all? Thankfully we are showing tremendous trust in him, and with very good reason.
Guardiola himself has said that his way of playing has come to fruition at Manchester City because of the massive spending, because he has got the top players required for his system. If it eventually leads to results, then what’s the problem? Every club wants to win. If you have the means to spend a lot and it leads to trophies, then I think there is nothing wrong with that.
