World Cup:
Roberto Firmino featured in Brazil’s 2-0 victory over Costa Rica. The forward came on in the 67th minute and had a massive impact in Brazil’s first goal deep into stoppage time. Liverpool’s number nine rose highest in the penalty box to header the ball down to Gabriel Jesus whose initial touch was poor, the ball fell to the feet of Coutinho and he poked the ball into the back of the net.
Dejan Lovren kept a clean sheet as Croatia stunned Argentina 3-0. Lovren provided a goal saving block to prevent Argentina scoring in the first half. Croatia are now through to the last-16.
Lovren: “I believed, from the beginning, that we could do it. When we are really like a defending bloc, together, they didn’t have big opportunities to be honest. We had a couple of them, [Mario] Mandzukic and then [Ivan] Perisic, we had a couple of chances and, like I said, when we defend together, like a team, we will always have our chances.”
The Egyptian FA has denied claims that Mohamed Salah will be able to leave the World Cup before their third and final game at the World Cup. Egypt’s next game will be against Saudi Arabia before the players depart.
Club News:
Jordan Henderson has praised Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and his attitude following the injury he suffered against Roma.
Henderson: “That was disappointing for us as a team because Ox has been brilliant all season.
He’s came in and I think he’s put in some brilliant performances and you can see how the fans have took to him straight away. [He’s] brilliant to have around in the dressing room, he’s a big character and he’ll be missed over the time that he’s out, definitely.
He’s got brilliant people around him and helping him, and the lads will help him as much as they can throughout that journey. I’ve got no doubt he’ll be back as soon as he can and he’ll be even better when he’s back.”
